Can I Put a Window Unit Air Conditioner Into an Attic Space?

While air conditioner (AC) installation might seem out of the question for an attic space, a window unit can be a good match provided two basic requirements are met: a window and a power outlet. If one or both of these requirements aren't featured in your attic, installing them and then installing the unit is always possible.

If the attic space in question features a vertical sliding window, a window unit air conditioner is the ideal candidate to cool the space. The unit's backside must be situated outside of the home. You can slide the window unit into the window so that the unit is half inside and half outside, and close the open window down into the unit's top rail. To prevent the unit from falling out of the window, you can install V-support and L brackets onto the outside wall and window, respectively. V-support brackets latch onto the bottom of the unit and screw into the outside wall just below the unit for added support as the back part of the unit is the heaviest. L brackets are fastened to the window and the window frame to prevent the window from opening.

A hole the size of the unit can be made in the attic wall to accommodate AC installation if a window isn't available. Wall installation calls upon the same principle as window installation; the unit must be half inside and half outside room. The air that exhausts out of the back of the unit is not only impure, but it's also hot, so to simply hook up the unit inside of the attic without a proper exhaust route is to cancel out the cooling function with the added exhaust. Depending on the size of the unit, a proper power supply could be tricky. Some units require a simple three-pronged power outlet while larger units require special outlets that handle larger electrical loads. Installing such an outlet in the attic in place of a normal power outlet is possible. If necessary, a surge protector can be used if it supports the required AC power load.

An air conditioner could help tremendously in cooling and drying an attic space. While not all air conditioner units primarily dehumidify a room, the cooling function dries the air as a side effect. If you wish to simply circulate the air within the room, you can engage the "Fan" mode.
