Installation of a window unit air conditioner into a sliding sash window can seem like a daunting task. You might envision the unit barreling out of the back of the window should you lose your grip while pulling the window down to secure the unit in place. Some units are encased in a metal cabinet, which can be removed. You can install the metal case completely first and then insert the unit, which takes a lot of the danger out of the installation.
Instructions

Insert the screwdriver into the screws on the side of the air conditioner casing and unscrew them. Slide the unit from the case and set it aside.
2Align the top guard rail with the holes on the top front part of the case, insert the supplied screws into the bottom of the case and screw them through the holes into the top guard rail.
3Insert the legs of the left and right accordion panels into the left and right sides of the top and bottom guard rails, respectively. If necessary, screw the supplied screws into the accordion panels from the inside of the case to secure them.
4Lift the window and insert the case onto the windowsill in the desired place that you would like to mount it. Lower the open window behind the unit's top guard rail.
5Insert screws into the holes of the front bottom of the case and screw them into the windowsill to secure the case.
6Lower the V-support brackets down through the bottom of the case outside the window one at a time. Place them as close as possible to the outside wall and bolt them through the inside of the case with the supplied bolts and a screwdriver. 7Pull the accordion panels out to the left and right edges of the window frame. Screw starter holes through the holes of the panels into the window frame. Screw a screw through the panels into each starter hole.
8Place an "L" bracket into each corner at the top of the open window so that half of the "L" bracket is against the top of the open window and the other half is against the window frame. Drill starter holes through holes of the "L" bracket halves that face the window frame into the window frame. Screw a screw into each starter hole through each bracket.
9Insert the air conditioner into the case and replace the screws into the sides of the case to secure it to the unit.

I've always been a little nervous about these air conditioners. Nobody wants to have one of those fall out the window and land on somebody.
