Air Conditioner BTU Vs. Amps

Air Conditioner BTU Vs. Amps

The world of air conditioners has a language all its own. BTUs and amps are two terms you need to be familiar with, whether you're a first-time buyer or are replacing an existing unit. Advances in technology and energy efficiency have increased the BTU capacity as well as the amp configurations on air conditioners today compared to what was offered 10 or more years ago.

BTUs

Air conditioners are rated by their capacity to generate cooling on a BTU per hour basis (BTUh). It is important to select the right BTUh for the size room you will be cooling. Choose too many, and you will be wasting energy and paying more than you need for electricity to run your air conditioner. If you choose too few, the unit will not perform as well as required for cooling. Too few BTUs could also push your air conditioner beyond its normal capacity, which could cause costly repairs or even shorten the lifespan of your air conditioner.

Amps

The plug for room air conditioners is based on voltage and amperage (AMP). Electrical outlets in most homes have circuits rated for 15 total amps of electricity. As a result, most window air conditioners are manufactured for 15 amps and 125 volts. You will typically see this noted as 125/15A on the air conditioner itself and in the owner's manual. If you select a model that requires more amps, such as a 30-amp model, you should get a licensed electrician to adapt your circuitry to accommodate the air conditioner. Making any adjustments to electrical work is not recommended as a do-it-yourself project.

BTU Considerations

In addition to the size of the room for the window air conditioner, there are additional factors you should consider. This includes the amount of sunlight the room receives, other appliances that utilize electricity, the average number of people who occupy the room, and whether the unit is on a second-story or attic space. Add 10 percent to your base BTU estimate for each instance that applies, such as whether the room is sunny, other appliances and if the room is on an upper floor. Add 600 more BTUs for each additional person occupying the room, such in the case of a bedroom shared by two. Add 4,000 extra BTUs if the unit will be used in a kitchen.

Amp Considerations

If you are purchasing a window air conditioner to replace an older unit, and can easily unplug the electrical cord, do so and take it along with you when you shop. Alternatively, you can unplug the cord and draw a sketch that shows how the prongs of the plug are laid out. This way you can focus on models that use the same type of electrical outlet and avoid those that have a different configuration.

Similarities and Differences

You'll find a range of BTU capacities, and a range of amp plug configurations among air conditioning units. Most room air conditioners will range from 5,000 BTUs to as high as 30,000. There are three basic configurations of plug receptacles for amps of air conditioners: parallel, perpendicular and tandem. Parallel and tandem plug receptacles are commonly used for 15 amp air conditioners, and tandem receptacles are more common for 20 amp units. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. Plug configurations will differ, based on the BTUs of the air conditioner and the number of amps utilized. This is why it's important to take your old cord with you or a diagram of the wall receptacle configuration when you shop.
