Can an Air Conditioner Be Put in the Attic?

Can an Air Conditioner Be Put in the Attic?

Because heat rises, putting an air conditioner unit in an attic is a logical idea; doing so can be beneficial if you have storage items in the attic you want to keep from getting too hot or if you want to use the attic as a living space, so long as you meet some basic requirements. A couple of types of air conditioner units are perfect for attic installation: portable air conditioner units and window air conditioner units.

Power Requirements

The first thing you want to ensure before installing an air conditioner in the attic is that you meet the proper power requirements of the AC. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. Smaller units might function aptly on a basic three-prong 110-volt power outlet, but larger units often require 220-volt outlets. If you're dead set on installing a particular unit but the attic power outlet doesn't support the unit, you can upgrade the outlet by uninstalling the existing attic power outlet and replacing it with an appropriate outlet. Don't hesitate to enlist the help of a technician unless you're an experienced electrician.

Exhaust Requirements

All air conditioner units require an exhaust route that leads outdoors. Technically, an air conditioner can function without an exhaust route, but the unit's exhaust is both dirty and hot, so the exhaust blowing out the back of the unit would negate the unit's cooling purpose. An air conditioner window unit can be installed in a window or in the wall. A sliding window that opens vertically is an ideal place to install a window-style air conditioner unit, while a wall opening will work just as well as long as the opening is properly sealed off to prevent air from escaping. A portable air conditioner unit is an ideal AC for an attic, as the exhaust conduit has a narrow exit end that's suited to fitting out a narrow window opening, either vertically or horizontally, or another small exhaust opening in the attic.

Drainage

Window-unit AC condensation drain out of the back of the unit, so if the unit is properly installed in a window or in the wall, water will drip outside from the back of the unit. If the unit is tipped forward slightly, though, drainage might flow to the front of the unit and create water damage on the inside of the house. To avoid this, level the unit or tilt it back slightly. A portable AC unit, on the other hand, has an internal drain tank, which you must drain periodically. Once the tank fills, the unit emits a signal. You'll have to empty and replace the tank for the unit to continue cooling.

"Dry" Cycle

While all air conditioner units tend to dry the air during the cooling process as a side effect, some units -- especially portables -- feature a dehumidifying or dry cycle. The dry cycle would be of great benefit in a humid attic space. The cycle, once activated, lasts approximately 20 minutes and pulls moisture from the air. During the dry cycle, the air conditioner doesn't cool, though the room temperature might drop slightly.
