A window unit air conditioner is designed purposely for installation into a sliding window or wall opening. While the unit is more suited to a vertical sliding window, it can fit just as well into a horizontal sliding window with some tweaking. Either way, the unit should be properly secured to the building and sealed.
Window Unit
Window unit air conditioners are intended for window installation, free up ground space and pack the most punch out of all units that can be installed in a window. The front of the unit is meant to face inside of the room and features the intake grille, vents and control panel. The intake grille can be opened for frequent air conditioner filter maintenance. The back part of the unit features the exhaust vents and must be faced and positioned outside.
Support
The most challenging aspect of a window unit installation is securing the unit to the window and outside wall to ensure that it doesn't plummet out of the back of the window. A falling window unit can be dangerous, especially from great heights. Some units come with V-support brackets, which fasten to the bottom of the unit and to the outside wall with bolts. To further secure the unit, you can attach L brackets, which also come supplied with some air conditioners, to the unit, the windowsill and to the top of the open window to ensure that the window can't be lifted from the top guard rail of the unit.
Seal
After the unit is completely installed, make sure cool air is unable to escape through the small openings created by the unit installation. For instance, before you install the unit, it's a good idea to peel the back off of two weather seal strips, which might also accompany a new air conditioner package, and press one to both the bottom of the window sash and the top of the sill. A weather strip can also fit between the top of the open window and the stationary window and on both sides of the accordion panels.
Portable Unit
If a window unit seems too cumbersome to install, a portable air conditioner can be installed easily into a sliding window. Each portable unit comes with an exhaust hose and a window slider component. The exhaust hose attaches to the window slider component and back of the air conditioner unit, which sits upright on the ground. The window slider component can stretch to fit the diameter of the open window. After the adjustment is made, the component is inserted horizontally at the bottom of the window frame and the open window is lowered to seal it into place.
