Can You Install a Portable Air Conditioner in a Casement Window?

A portable air conditioner must emit evaporated air out of the home through an exhaust hose, especially during the cooling or dry cycle. A standard window that lifts or slides open is ideal, but some units come with extra attachments for occurrence of casement windows. Before you install the unit, you'll want to learn how to hook up the hose.

Before you attach the exhaust hose to the casement window, attach the hose to the unit. On the back of the unit, there should be a designated spot or circle for exhaust hose attachment. Some portable air conditioner units feature an alternative window component that fits onto the end of the exhaust hose. Portable units must utilize an exhaust hose for some functions, such as cooling. The exhaust is usually attached to a window slider component, which is rectangular and is meant to fit into a narrow opening between the open window and the windowsill. The alternative component is a flattened, hollow opening, which is sort of shaped like the head of a shovel. This component fits onto the end of the exhaust hose and mounts into the window.

You'll want to select a window that is close to the placement of the unit. Attach the alternative window component to the end of the exhaust hose, and open the casement window. The hose should be as straight as possible with no kinks, so you might want to find out if this is possible before installing the hose into the window. The component fits into the window vertically so that the opening of the window is as thin as possible and just the end of the component is sticking out of the window.

To hold the windows closed, fasten the two window handles together with a strap or string. If only one windowpane has a handle, some units come with a suction cup. Clean the area of the handle-less window where you want to apply the suction cup; wet the suction cup, and press it to the window until it sticks. Tie the strap or string to the opposite window's handle, and tie the other end of the strap to the suction cup. You can insert sealant strips along the window where it's opened so that the window is sealed and prevents air from escaping.
