Can You Use a Portable Air Conditioner in an Attic?

A portable air conditioner is ideal for attic use, especially if the situation is temporary. It's the easiest to install of all the air conditioner units, features a handle or handles for transportation and can be rolled using its four bottom casters. Before lugging the unit up into the attic, there are a few things you should check.

Window

One of the most important requirements of a standard portable air conditioner is a window. The unit features an exhaust hose that must be mounted to a window, so that impurities from the air conditioner can be exhausted out of the room into the outside air. The exhaust hose mounts to a window slider component, which is a flat rectangular panel that can stretch wider or shrink down to fit the width of any sliding window. The component is installed in the bottom part of the sliding window and the open window slides down on top of it to secure the component in place. The window slider component also fits into horizontal sliding windows.

Power Outlet

Power is another essential requirement of a portable air conditioner. You'll need a three-pronged wall outlet with the required voltage rating to power the portable air conditioner. If there is no wall outlet available or the wall outlet isn't close to the window, it's possible to use an extension cord or surge protector, as long as the cord has a three-pronged outlet and supplies the proper voltage.

Drainage

A portable air conditioner requires occasional drainage of the internal drain tank or pan, regardless of where the unit is used. A portable unit pulls a healthy amount of moisture from the air when in cool mode and a lot of moisture from the air when in dry mode. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. If the attic is particularly humid, the drainage tank needs to be emptied more than usual. If the tank isn't emptied, the unit's cooling or drying component shuts down. Some units feature a detachable tank, but if yours doesn't, you must carry the unit to a drainage area, unscrew the drain cap at the back of the unit and manually drain the unit.

Function

If you plan to use the portable air conditioner to remove humidity from the attic, you need only to press the "Dry" button on the unit's interface. Other elements of the interface include a "Cool" button and a "Fan Speed" button. If you wish only to circulate the air within the room, then an exhaust hose isn't required and, as a result, neither is a window. The fan function doesn't make use of the cooling or drying elements of the unit, so no exhaustive air is produced.
