Can a Portable Air Conditioner Be Connected to a Side Sliding Window?

A portable air conditioner (AC) unit is capable of fitting into many types of windows, due to its relatively small window installation requirements. The only portable AC component that needs to be installed in a window is the exhaust hose, while the main portion of the unit sits on the ground inside of the room.

Some units come with an adjustable window slider component. A window slider is a rectangular piece that can be adjusted to fit the width of a window and is as tall as the mouth of the exhaust hose that comes with the unit. The attached exhaust hose is able to blow evaporated air out of the back of the unit into the outside air, while the window slider prevents air from escaping out of the window. You can slide the window up and open, insert the slider in the open space between the window and the sill, extend the slider out to both sides of the window frame, lower the window sash to the top of the slider and attach the exhaust hose to the slider exhaust hole.

Sliding windows sometimes open from the side, where the window is pushed open from the left to the right or vice versa. The window slider component is very versatile, in that it fits nicely into a horizontal sliding window just as well as a vertical sliding window. You can turn the window slider component vertical, adjust it to the length from the top to the bottom of the horizontal sliding window, insert it into the open window, slide the window over to butt up against the side of the slider and attach the exhaust hose. In any instance, the exhaust hose needs to be as straight as possible from the window to the unit.

In order to secure a vertical or horizontal sliding window against the window slider component, you can use two L brackets on the locking side of the window and the window frame. Butt an L bracket into one of the corners where the top of the open window meets the stationary window. Screw a screw through the hole of the bracket and into the window frame, not to be confused with the top of the open window. This should be done on both sides of the window.

The other end of the exhaust hose connects to the back of the portable air conditioner unit. There is a hole the size of the mouth of the exhaust hose on the back of the unit, which is sometimes covered up with a cap to prevent debris from entering the unit. The cap screws off and the exhaust hose mouth screws on.
