Air Conditioner Test Methods

After new air conditioner installation, a proper test is in order to confirm that everything functions as it should. Certain key elements, such as the fan and cooling feature, are essential to proper air conditioner performance. By engaging the main components, all aspects of the unit are tested as a result.

Fan

The first thing to monitor on an air conditioner unit is the fan function. The fan is the basic element of the air conditioner and can operate in tandem with the cooling element to chill the room or independently to circulate the air within the room. The "Fan" button is sometimes assigned to a single button or is a function that can be reached with multiple presses to the "Mode" button. When the fan activates, air is sucked through the intake grille and blown out through the vents or louvers. When the cooling element engages, the fan must function with it, or the air conditioner unit might freeze.

Cool

The cooling function is an air conditioner's prized feature and is most likely the reason you purchased the unit in the first place. If the thermostat is set below room temperature, the cooling function activates along with the fan. The two work together to blow cold air from the vents. The cool function is activated with continuous presses to the "Mode" button until the "Cool" indicator light illuminates.

Thermostat

Cold air output is governed by the thermostat component, which can be adjusted up for warmer air or down for colder air. The currently set temperature appears on the unit display. For the cooling element to activate, the thermostat must be set lower than room temperature. For instance, if the temperature in the room feels like 80 degrees Fahrenheit, set the thermostat lower until you hear the internal compressor kick in. When the compressor kicks in, the cooling element is engaged and cold air blows from the unit.

Dry

Some air conditioner units feature a dry or dehumidifying function, which removes moisture from the air. When the "Dry" button is pressed, the internal dehumidifier is engaged. She just cut her electricity bill to 60%, click here to read. The unit pulls humidity from the air and exhausts it from the unit into the outside air. While the dry function doesn't produce cold air, the function might cool the room slightly.

Remote Control

After batteries are loaded into the remote control, you can operate the unit with it if you're standing within approximately 20 feet of the unit. Adjust or operate each function on the remote control until a proper test has been completed.
